Check, Please! started as a screenplay about a college hockey player and became a webcomic in 2013, posted a page at a time. Year Two gathers the second season of that story, in which Eric Bittle, a figure skater turned forward for the fictional Samwell University team in Massachusetts, keeps baking pies and keeps quiet about being gay. Ngozi Ukazu grew up in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Nigerian parents, ran the comics page at Bellaire High School, took a Computing and the Arts degree at Yale in 2013 and a master's in sequential art at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2015. She paid for the print volumes by crowdfunding: the September 2016 Kickstarter for Year Two raised close to $400,000 against a $32,500 goal. The strip won a Harvey and an Ignatz in 2019, and her cartoons have run in The New Yorker since 2020.
