Philip Stanhope, better known as Philip Dormer Stanhope, fourth Earl of Chesterfield, was an eighteenth-century British statesman, diplomat, and man of letters. He served as ambassador at The Hague, lord lieutenant of Ireland, and secretary of state, experience that sharpened his interest in persuasion and social conduct. Letters to his Son, 1750 and Letters to his Son, 1766-1771 select from the correspondence addressed to his son Philip and, in the later group, to his godson and successor. The letters discuss languages, reading, travel, manners, public life, and the disciplined observation expected of a gentleman entering European society. They were not originally composed as a conventional book; publication after Chesterfield’s lifetime turned private instruction into a lasting document of elite education. His polished advice has also drawn criticism for valuing worldly tact too highly. These dated selections help readers follow how his counsel changed with the age and circumstances of each recipient.
