Reuben Gold Thwaites shaped American historical scholarship as an editor and librarian who made early continental travel accounts more accessible. Early Western Travels 1748-1846 is a thirty-two-volume series that he edited, bringing together journals and narratives by explorers, traders, missionaries, and travellers moving through territories west of the Alleghenies. Thwaites served for many years as secretary and superintendent of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. He also edited the Jesuit Relations and Allied Documents, another large collection built from scattered primary texts. Early Western Travels 1748-1846 reflects his method of pairing historical documents with introductions, notes, maps, and bibliographical guidance. The series includes accounts by figures such as Conrad Weiser, George Croghan, John Bradbury, and Maximilian of Wied. Although its editorial language belongs to its period, the project remains an important record of how nineteenth-century scholars assembled sources on travel, settlement, diplomacy, and Indigenous-settler encounters.
