Robert Barr was a Scottish-born Canadian journalist, novelist, and short-story writer who became known for energetic crime fiction and comic detective tales. Two Sherlock Holmes Parodies gathers “The Adventures of Sherlaw Kombs” and “The Adventure of the Second Swag,” stories that imitate and exaggerate the methods associated with Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective. Barr replaces Holmes with the confidently named Sherlaw Kombs and turns brilliant deduction into comic overstatement. Wikisource identifies both pieces within Barr’s bibliography, while Google Books describes them alongside his Eugène Valmont stories and notes their affectionate parody of Doyle’s model. Barr co-founded and edited The Idler in London, where his familiarity with magazine fiction helped him write compact plots suited to quick reversals and punch lines. Two Sherlock Holmes Parodies shows his place in the early history of Holmes-inspired literature, before pastiche became a large publishing field. The stories work both as Victorian detective comedy and as evidence of how rapidly Holmes became recognizable enough to be playfully transformed.
