Stuart Dybek is an American fiction writer and poet closely associated with Chicago's neighborhoods, immigrant histories, and working-class streets. The Coast of Chicago gathers stories in which familiar city details open into memory, music, loss, and moments of the uncanny. Picador describes bottle caps becoming grave markers, a right fielder acquiring the aura of a martyr, and Chopin drifting through a tenement airshaft. The Chicago Public Library chose the collection for One Book, One Chicago in 2004, emphasizing its portrayal of the city as both a particular place and an imaginative landscape. Dybek grew up around Little Village and Pilsen, and his bibliography also includes Childhood and Other Neighborhoods, I Sailed with Magellan, Paper Lantern, and Ecstatic Cahoots. His fiction moves easily between compressed realism and dreamlike transformation while keeping the voices and textures of urban life in view.
