Stuart J. Reid
Stuart Johnson Reid (1848-1927) was an English journalist, biographer and man of letters. He spent fourteen years as chief reviewer for the Leeds Mercury, gave some thirty years to the literary staff of the Standard, and wrote for the Speaker. He specialised in Victorian public lives, producing studies of the clergyman and wit Sydney Smith and the industrialist Sir Richard Tangye, as well as Representative Men in the Reign of Queen Victoria. He edited the series of political biographies of Queen Victoria's prime ministers, writing this volume for it himself, and later catalogued the Marlborough family manuscripts at Blenheim Palace.
