Hell and Gone, published in 2019, sends Everett Dawson, newly made a stock detective for the state of Montana, from Helena into the Crazy Mountains to trace missing cattle. It sets him against Lawrence Jackson, the rancher who was the last man to see a dead cowboy alive. Bauer subtitles the book a gay western romantic suspense, and it stands apart from his political Executive Office sequence, which began with Enemies of the State in 2016, and the Big Bend Texas Rangers books that opened with Never Stay Gone in 2021. He attributes the procedural detail in his plots to earlier work in law enforcement and in international humanitarian aid. He belongs to the Mystery Writers of America and lives in Texas with his husband.
