Simon Pulse published the novel in 2012, placing Sara's investigation inside a tense account of secrecy, family control, grief, and trust. Bilen keeps the story close to Sara's limited knowledge, so each clue also tests what she believes about her parents, her late brother, and her friend Zach. The rural Michigan setting and Sara's school life give the mystery an everyday frame rather than separating danger from ordinary routines. Bilen later published the teen thriller Watch Your Back, continuing her interest in characters who must judge incomplete information under pressure. What She Left Behind introduced that approach through a protagonist whose determination grows from protecting herself and learning why the people nearest to her have concealed the truth.
