William Brown presented The Tabernacle as a detailed guide to the biblical sanctuary, its priesthood, furnishings, offerings, and ritual calendar. W. Oliphant & Company issued the 1871 printing in Edinburgh and London. A revised and enlarged third edition followed under W. Oliphant in 1874, while an 1881 fifth edition appeared from Oliphant, Anderson & Ferrier. Brown organizes the subject around the structure described in Exodus, moving from the outer court to the holy place and the innermost sanctuary. Separate sections discuss the ark, altar, lampstand, table, priestly garments, sacrifices, feast days, and the duties assigned to members of the priesthood. Engraved illustrations and plans help readers connect the written descriptions with the physical arrangement of the sanctuary. The book belongs to a nineteenth-century tradition of Protestant biblical exposition that treated architecture and ceremony as connected parts of interpretation. Its full title, The Tabernacle and Its Priests and Services, is more precise than the shortened catalogue form because it signals the work’s attention to both sacred space and religious office.
