William Frederick Poole shaped nineteenth-century American library practice through bibliography and institutional leadership. The Popham colony gathers a dispute about the historical importance of an English settlement founded near the Kennebec River's mouth in Maine in 1607. Writing as P., Poole answered arguments by Edward Ballard and Frederic Kidder. Their contributions first ran in the Boston Daily Advertiser and were later collected with a bibliography. The resulting volume lets readers follow competing claims, replies, and the documents used to test them. Poole worked at the Boston Athenaeum before becoming the Newberry Library's first librarian in Chicago. His name is also attached to Poole's Index to Periodical Literature, a major aid for locating magazine articles. That bibliographical discipline shapes this historical exchange: evidence accompanies assertion, contrary interpretations remain visible, and readers receive a route into earlier scholarship. The book consequently preserves both a colonial-history controversy and the research habits through which it unfolded.
