A silent Vipassana course in 2012, in the tradition taught by S. N. Goenka, is where Diego Perez dates the beginning of his writing. Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, he came to Boston with his family as a child, studied at Wesleyan University, and got clean from drugs and alcohol shortly before he started sitting. He publishes as yung pueblo, Spanish for young people, posting short reflections and poems to an audience of millions on Instagram. Clarity & Connection, issued by Andrews McMeel on 27 April 2021, is the middle volume of his Inward trilogy and works through how stored emotion conditions the way people behave with one another. It entered the American advice and how-to list at number seven. Perez holds no clinical or therapeutic qualification and refuses the title of teacher, calling himself an explorer on the same road as his readers; the books, talks and retreats are his living.
