About this book
The volume offers selections from the letters of Eliza Southgate Bowne, with an introduction by Clarence Cook. The text says the letters are not those of a practised writer, nor was there ever in her mind any thought of publication. The text says all the girls of Miss Southgate’s acquaintance were writing letters to their friends, long ones, often made up in the manner of a diary, with a week’s doings recorded day by day.
One entry records Friday to Nahant, fishing, with Mr. and Mrs. Hasket Derby, Mr. and Mrs. John Derby and Miss Bishop, among others. Another entry says that all went to Mrs. Grey’s, that there was dancing in the evening, and that Miss Bishop plays and sings charmingly. A letter dated Charleston, February 21, 1809, tells my dear Parents that Eliza is freed from her earthly sufferings and that the writer humbly trusts she is now a blessed spirit in Heaven.
