About this book

A Bible verse becomes the starting point for each of Frank Boreham's essays, connecting religious reflection with the lives of historical people and characters from fiction. Published in 1922, the collection moves among figures such as William Penn, Michael Faraday, Catherine Booth and Robinson Crusoe. Boreham explains in his introduction why a passage that shapes an imagined life can also reveal something about the writer behind it.

The opening essay follows Penn's encounters with the Quaker preacher Thomas Loe and considers faith as a force in both private conduct and public affairs. Elsewhere, a discussion of Thomas Huxley brings together justice, mercy, humility and the limits of an individual's understanding. These chapters offer readers a view of Christian interpretation through personal stories, with attention to the words that people carry into decisions, doubts and responsibilities.
