About this book
Douglas Hyde's A Literary History of Ireland, from Earliest Times to the Present Day is dated 1899. It is dedicated to the members of the Gaelic League, and the dedication states that Ireland has a past, a history and a literature. A short poem in Irish, headed Do Chonnradh na Gaeldheilge, follows it.
One passage gathers what classical writers said of Ireland: Tacitus on its harbours, Ptolemy's list of Irish names, Solinus on the absence of snakes, and Claudian on the Scots. Another follows Brendan's voyage, in which the travellers celebrate Easter on the back of a great whale. A later passage concerns the colleges of the hereditary bards in the sixteenth century and the poems of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that Hyde has read.
