About this book

Ishmael Beah recounts being displaced by war in Sierra Leone and becoming a soldier while still a child. His memoir follows that experience alongside the later work of recovery with help from a rehabilitation centre. The opening contrasts school friends' curiosity in New York with memories of refugees arriving in his hometown before the conflict reached his own life.
