A View of Society and Manners in Italy, Volume 1 of 2, is the first volume of the 1781 travel book by John Moore (1729-1802), the Scottish physician and writer who was the father of the Peninsular War general Sir John Moore of Corunna. Moore travelled to Italy as personal physician and tutor to the young Duke of Hamilton, and the book records the journey through Naples, Rome, Florence, Venice, and the smaller Italian states in the years just before the French Revolution. Moore writes with a sharp eye for political and ecclesiastical institutions, for social manners, and for the contrast between the splendour of papal Rome and the daily lives of the Italian poor. The book was widely read in Britain and influenced later Romantic-era views of Italy. Moore also produced a similar View of Society and Manners in France, Switzerland, and Germany.
