David Lindsay uses this strange pilgrimage to press one relentless question about what lies behind pleasure, will, and the illusion of the self. Ignored on release, the book later drew the admiration of C. S. Lewis and Harold Bloom, who called it a work of genius. It remains one of the odder landmarks of visionary science fiction.
