About this book
Allan Ramsay is by William Henry Oliphant Smeaton. The volume is dedicated to David Masson, LL.D., Emeritus Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature in Edinburgh University. The preface says that after the volume was in type the author received additional information, and mentions the Easy Club and a sight of its complete Minutes.
In the spring of 1711 Allan Ramsay asked the daughter of the lawyer to share life's lot with him, and the text says "To win consent, the matter had to be prudently gone about." James Ross's wig was sent down on Saturday to receive its week's dressing from young Ramsay. Dr. Daniel Wilson, in Reminiscences of Old Edinburgh, is quoted as saying "Ramsay had much more of the poet than the antiquary in his composition". The author takes up "Bessy Bell and Mary Gray" and says "what a rich fancy and charming humour plays throughout the piece".
