An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales, Volume 1, is a foundational early Australian historical text describing the first decades of British settlement at Sydney from 1788 onward. The book belongs to the body of late Georgian colonial reportage by the early settlers and explorers of New South Wales. George Bass (1771-1803) was the Royal Navy surgeon and explorer whose name survives in Bass Strait, the body of water between mainland Australia and Tasmania that he established as a separate sea in 1798 in the small whaleboat Tom Thumb and the sloop Norfolk with Matthew Flinders. The volume records the early colony, its government, the New South Wales Corps, the early settler economy, and the relations with the Eora and other Aboriginal peoples of the Sydney region. It is a primary source for Australian colonial history. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
