This is a commemorative address by Oliver Cromwell Hartley (1823-1859), the Texas lawyer and legal writer who compiled Hartley's Digest of the laws of Texas, a standard reference of the early state. The address, delivered before soldiers and citizens, belongs to the civic oratory of antebellum Texas. Hartley died young, but his legal compilations served the courts of Texas for decades.
