About this book
An Imaginary Life is a 1978 novella by David Malouf. It tells the story of the Roman poet Ovid during his exile in Tomis, a settlement at the edge of the empire. Ovid lives among the local people without understanding their language, and he comes to know a wild boy who has been found living in nature.
At first Ovid acts as the boy's protector and teacher, but the relationship becomes an alliance between two people in a strange land. Through it Ovid leaves behind the Roman view of the world he arrived with. The book looks at identity, change and the human link to nature.
