Homer Nicholas has a great deal to explain to Morton City's chief of police. His letter begins with a vanished underworld, a delayed honeymoon and an uncle whose scientific ambitions have disrupted a wedding. Peter Nicholas works behind a steel laboratory door, absorbed in a serum he believes will change civilization. When Homer and Joy persuade him to attend their reception, his research and their celebrations begin to overlap.
Ralph Sholto mixes science fiction with gangster comedy through Homer's elaborate account of the confusion. Joy pursues a suspicious car with Homer and the reluctant Bag Ears Mulligan squeezed beside her, while family snobbery supplies another source of friction. The letter format lets Homer's formal explanations rub against quick exchanges and improbable events. Readers looking for comic inventions and a wedding party thrown off course will find both in this short tale.
