About this book
Animal Intelligence aims to assemble the more important facts of animal intelligence as completely as its author can make the account. The treatise uses intelligence to designate lower degrees of the faculty of reasoning, distinguishing that usage from instinct and reflex action. The discussion says that instinct shades into reason by imperceptible degrees across the ascending scale of animal life.
An account of burying beetles describes insects undermining a stick to bring down an otherwise unreachable toad and bury it. An account credited to G. Berkeley describes a beetle carrying a dead spider up a heath plant and securing it on a twig.
