About this book

Edinburgh's one o'clock signal starts a sequence of twelve city visits, each assigned its own hour. Charles Fish Howell's 1912 travel sketches move from afternoon in Edinburgh through places including Rome, Prague and London to Paris after midnight. In the opening scene, a visitor steps out of Waverley Station into the bustle of Princes Street, where gardens, railway tracks, old buildings and the monument to Walter Scott compete for attention.

The Berlin chapter follows the city into evening, noticing electric shop displays, quick postal services, restaurant prices and traffic along Unter den Linden. Howell watches everyday conveniences as closely as famous landmarks, giving his descriptions the feel of a stroll interrupted by observations and associations. Readers interested in older accounts of city life can compare these crowded streets and practical details with the author's enthusiastic, sometimes sweeping judgments about the people around him.
