About this book
Albert Manucy's Artillery Through the Ages is subtitled A Short Illustrated History of Cannon, Emphasizing Types Used in America. The title page credits him as historian of Southeastern National Monuments and says the drawings are by the author. It is dated 1949, with a reprint in 1956, and notes that many of the types of cannon described can be seen in areas of the National Park System.
The sampled pages describe cannon coming into general use during the Hundred Years' War, and the giant bombards that followed, such as Dulle Griete of Ghent, with a 25-inch caliber, and Edinburgh Castle's Mons Meg. They also mention the Great Mortar of Moscow, built about 1525, with a bore of 36 inches. A table gives Muller's proportions for field, ship, siege and garrison guns, with the shot diameter divided into 24 parts, and another passage lists the numbered crew of a gun and the work of the gunner.
