About this book
At Home with the Jardines is by Lilian Bell. The contents list names, among others, chapters titled On the Subject of Janitors, The Angel and the Agent and How We Tamed the Cook. Chapter I, Mary, has a narrator who has never dared even inquire why the best man began calling the narrator's husband the Angel.
Mary says that a man she speaks of would not let her reach up to take the globes off to clean them, nor lift the five-gallon water-bottle when it came in full from the grocer. The Angel says that New York has its compensations, and that not even Paris is so beautifully situated. A teller says the bricks were left on Mother Earth while the teller, having still hold of the rope, passed the staves in mid-air, lighting in a sitting posture on the pile of bricks.
