Balcony Stories is an 1893 collection by Grace Elizabeth King (1852-1932), the New Orleans writer who chronicled Louisiana Creole life and answered what she saw as George Washington Cable’s unfair portrayals of the South. Told as tales exchanged by women on the balconies of New Orleans, the sketches capture the city’s society, its women, and the lingering shadow of the Civil War. King was a leading Southern local-color writer. The collection is among her finest work. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
