Monsieur Motte is the 1888 first book by Grace Elizabeth King (1852-1932), the New Orleans author of Creole Louisiana. It tells of a young Creole girl raised by her devoted Black hairdresser, who has secretly supported her in the guise of an unseen uncle, exploring race, loyalty, and society in the post-war South.
