Monsieur Motte

Monsieur Motte is the 1888 first book by Grace Elizabeth King (1852-1932), the New Orleans author of Creole Louisiana. It tells of a young Creole girl raised by her devoted Black hairdresser, who has secretly supported her in the guise of an unseen uncle, exploring race, loyalty, and society in the post-war South. The book established King as a significant voice of Southern fiction. It is a key work of nineteenth-century Louisiana literature. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
