About this book

A bashful admirer, two carefully composed letters and a meddling confidant set the comic machinery moving in Bill Nye's 1884 collection. Harry Bevans asks the narrator to help him begin a correspondence with Fanny Buttonhook. Fanny then asks that same narrator to draft her reply. From this tangled arrangement, Nye builds his humor out of inflated language, practical calculations and the awkwardness of people trying to make an impression.

The short pieces range across household matters, newspaper work, local politics and social habits. In one episode, false election news persuades Judge Wetherby to celebrate prematurely; in another, a departing carpenter earns a grand farewell for the debts he leaves behind. Readers interested in nineteenth-century American comic prose will find a voice that turns ordinary business into elaborate nonsense, mixing conversational storytelling with mock solemnity and pointed observations about vanity and trust.

About the author

Bill Nye

Bill Nye was the pen name of Edgar Wilson Nye, the nineteenth-century American humorist and journalist, not the later science educator who shares that name. Comic History of the United States presents American history through comic exaggeration, mock solemnity, and Frederick Burr Opper's energetic illustrations. The work first appeared in 1894 through J. B.
