About this book
Batiks, and How to Make Them is by Pieter Mijer, with illustrations from photographs by G. W. Harting. The foreword gives a double purpose: first, to make this ancient art more known to the public in general and to the many textile craftworkers in particular, and secondly, to give some practical advice. The text says a great many people seem to be under the impression that ordinary household dyes are not good enough to use in batik work.
Rubber gloves, the text says, will give some protection to the hands when handling materials in the dye-bath. The text describes a fabric in a dye bath altogether about 40 minutes, with the dye at about 105° for the first half and reduced to 90° for the last twenty minutes.
