About this book
Personal gardens reveal the tastes of their owners in Louise Shelton's illustrated survey of planting across America. Her foreword sets out an interest in beauty created through flowers and other living growth. Regional chapters extend from New England to California, Alaska and Vancouver Island, allowing readers to compare gardens shaped by different climates and local conditions.
The discussion of New Jersey gives practical detail to this broad view. Shelton considers soil, summer temperatures, water supplies and occasional drought, then follows the flowering calendar from spring bulbs to summer hollyhocks. At Glen Alpine, old trees, an ancient hedge and a hillside planted with flowering trees frame a garden whose bloom continues until frost. Photographs, descriptions and observations on climate make the volume useful to readers interested in garden history, planting choices and the ways a garden fits its surroundings.
