A portrait is captioned Beethoven at the age of 48, from a painting by Kloeber. A text headed The Heiligenstadt Will addresses men who regard or declare the writer to be malignant, stubborn or cynical, and tells them how unjust they are towards him. The writer of The Heiligenstadt Will says that during the last six years he has been in a wretched condition, rendered worse by unintelligent physicians.

A letter numbered III is addressed to Eleonore von Breuning in Bonn, dated Vienna, November 2, 1793, and calls her my dearest friend. The letter to Eleonore von Breuning says to draw a curtain over the whole story and learn the lesson that when friends fall out it is always better to have no go-between, but for friend to turn directly to friend. A list of sources names, among others, Biographie Notizen über Ludwig van Beethoven by F. G. Wegeler and Ferdinand Reis, described as especially valuable for the first part of his life.

Romain Rolland

Romain Rolland (1866-1944) was a French novelist, dramatist, and essayist awarded the 1915 Nobel Prize in Literature. A committed pacifist and humanist, he is remembered for the epic novel cycle Jean-Christophe and for his outspoken opposition to the nationalism of the First World War.
