About this book

This is a guide to the cathedral church of Rochester, with a description of its fabric and a brief history of the episcopal see. The title page gives G. H. Palmer, B.A., as author, with London and 1897 as place and year. A general preface explains that the series of monographs was planned to give visitors to the great English cathedrals accurate, well illustrated guide books at a popular price, useful to students of archaeology and history yet not too technical for an ordinary visitor.

The text takes in the early history of the see in Kent, naming Bishop Justus, Bishop Putta and King Alfred, and quoting Lambarde on the Danes and Rochester. Another passage covers the city walls, the Prior's Gate and Minor Canon Row, and a further one lists bishops with their dates and the sees they later held.
