About this book
Coral reefs, concealed guns and steep ridges shape Gordon D. Gayle's account of the Marine landings on Peleliu in September 1944. The history begins with amphibian tractors carrying five infantry battalions toward beaches that had already received heavy naval and aerial bombardment. As the troops come ashore, the terrain and Japanese defensive arrangements upset expectations of a short operation.
Gayle follows the battle through named units, commanders and positions, giving particular attention to the Umurbrogol ridges and the eastern peninsula. Movements toward Purple Beach bring questions of supply, weather and coordination into the account, alongside episodes involving supporting fire and military dogs. Maps, photographs and sections on tactics accompany the campaign narrative. Readers interested in Pacific military history can use these details to see how plans, local geography and decisions in the field interacted during a difficult island assault.
