About this book

The fertile country around Sicca Veneria gives this third-century novel its opening scene: gardens, olive groves, villas and roads linking a Roman African city to the coast. John Henry Newman uses this setting to imagine the relations between Christians and their pagan neighbours. His introductory note identifies the story as fiction written from a Catholic point of view, with religious feeling and human relationships at its centre.

That orderly landscape contrasts with the unrest shown later in the story. Famine and epidemic disease intensify a crowd's hostility towards Christians, while magistrates and soldiers respond to the danger and religious establishments react to the procession. The novel brings questions of conviction and belonging into the streets of a provincial city. Readers interested in early Christian fiction can follow its picture of faith under public pressure, alongside its detailed descriptions of the surrounding country.
