About this book
When neighbors arrive to clean Captain Pott's neglected house and yard, the irritable seaman discovers that his home has become a village project. The new minister, Mack McGowan, is to lodge with him, and the Captain has already met his guest in a painful misunderstanding involving a pantry light and a suspected intruder. Elizabeth Fox, daughter of a Little River church elder, can soften the old man's temper.
Francis L. Cooper's humorous novel builds its scenes from blunt conversation, unwanted kindness, and the awkward business of living among watchful neighbors. McGowan brings a boxer's respect for self-control to his work, while his feelings for Elizabeth complicate her wish to help him through trouble. With its seaman's turns of speech and uneasy romantic conversations, the book offers village comedy shaped by affection, pride, and the demands of church life.
