About this book
Cattle and Their Diseases is a book by Robert Jennings. The full title says the work embraces their history and breeds, crossing and breeding, and feeding and management, with the diseases to which they are subject and the remedies best adapted to their cure. Robert Jennings is named as professor of pathology and operative surgery in the veterinary college of Philadelphia.
A passage on the Ayrshire, with a picture of an Ayrshire bull, says the breed is justly celebrated throughout Great Britain and this country for its excellent dairy qualities. The pure Ayrshires are generally red and white, spotted or mottled in color. The text says the grazier acquires his knowledge by skillful acumen and not by theoretical rules. One entry defines cathartics as medicines, also known as purgatives, which cause free evacuations of the bowels.
