About this book
Written for mothers telling stories at home, Mary A. Lathbury's collection presents Bible narratives in short chapters for children. It begins with the creation of the world and follows figures including Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Ruth and David before turning to the life and teaching of Jesus. Lathbury explains that she aims to keep close to the biblical account and uses the wording of the Authorized Version for quoted speech.
The storytelling moves from the making of light, seas and living things to scenes of family life, royal courts and religious teaching. In the New Testament section, an angel appears to Zacharias in the temple and Gabriel brings a message to Mary in Nazareth. The book offers families a way to introduce these narratives through connected prose, while also showing how a Christian writer understood religious education in the home.
