Clotel

Often cited as the first novel published by an African American, this 1853 work confronts slavery through the story of Clotel and her sister, imagined as the enslaved daughters of Thomas Jefferson. After the president’s death, the women and their mother are sold apart, scattered through a system that treats human beings as property to be bartered, mortgaged, and abused. Brown, himself a fugitive from slavery, weaves real speeches, documents, and reported incidents into the narrative to expose the gap between the young republic’s stated ideals and its daily practice. The result is both a suspenseful story of separated families and a pointed abolitionist argument. Its portrait of the founder’s mixed-race children made it especially incendiary in its day. This free PDF and EPUB edition preserves a landmark of American literature.
