About this book
A nervous narrator traces his troubles all the way back to infancy, blaming interrupted sleep, excessive attention and the habits formed around him. William Taylor Marrs presents this first-person account with a physician's interest in behavior and a taste for comic exaggeration. His prefatory note says that nearly every incident draws on actual experience, while one speaker carries the anxieties of a much larger group.
The comedy becomes particularly sharp when the narrator studies anatomy, worries about food particles and decides that a pain must mean appendicitis. A doctor's question exposes a flaw in his confident diagnosis. Chapters also follow his search for suitable work, changing diets and experiments with fashionable systems of belief and treatment. Confessions of a Neurasthenic offers readers a period portrait of health worries, self-observation and the way each new attempt at reassurance can create another concern.
