About this book
Crooked Trails is written and illustrated by Frederic Remington. The book was first published in 1898, and its author is described as the author of Pony Tracks. The contents list names, among others, How the Law Got into the Chaparral, The Blue Quail of the Cactus and A Sergeant of the Orphan Troop.
A speaker in the book says that they made an examination of their ammunition and found that they couldn't afford to fight six hundred Mexicans with sixty men, so they pulled out. The text says it is astonishing how short is the distance at which we can see a picket even in this bright night on the open hills. The writer says that our men did not hesitate to take two hundred and fifty pounds over short portages, which were very rough and stony.
