About this book
With thirty pounds left after her father's death, Susan Hawthorne wants work and a way to support herself. Lord Hannassay, an old friend of her father and a Home Office official, gives her work copying letters. A chance meeting in Piccadilly brings her back into contact with Christopher Arden, known as Storm, an adventurer who also has dealings with Scotland Yard.
Leslie Charteris builds this detective novel around the Alpha Triangle, a conspiracy that leaves Inspector Teal weighing suspects and struggling to follow Arden's decisions. Disputed evidence, a released prisoner and plans for a court appearance keep the investigation unsettled. Arden answers Teal's frustration with jokes and elaborate cigarette tricks, giving the police exchanges a playful edge. Readers who enjoy mysteries carried by sharp dialogue and an adventurous investigator will find both in this London story.
