In Berlin he meets Kautilya, an Indian princess at the center of a secret alliance uniting the world’s colonized peoples against white domination. What follows is part political manifesto and part sweeping romance, as Matthew is pulled into conspiracy, disillusionment, and a love that crosses continents. Du Bois wove pan-African and anti-colonial ideas into a deliberately melodramatic plot, and he named this his own favorite among his books. W. E. B. Du Bois (1868-1963) was an American sociologist, historian, and activist, and the first African American to receive a doctorate from Harvard. A co-founder of the NAACP and a tireless advocate for civil rights and Pan-Africanism, he wrote across sociology, history, and literature.
