About this book
Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande is a guide to the opera with musical examples from the score, with sections on the play and the music. The contents divide the treatment of the play into its qualities and its action, and identify a section devoted to themes and their treatment.
The biographical account describes studies in harmony, composition and piano playing at the conservatory while the composer was still a youth. Pelléas invites Mélisande under the shade of the linden, but Mélisande wishes to remain where the light allows her to be seen. The musical analysis describes the Fate theme played by four horns in unison over string tremolos as Golaud strikes down Pelléas. The description of the last act gives its opening phrase to the violas, with harp accompaniment.
