Democracy: An American Novel
Henry Brooks Adams’ political book “Democracy: An American Novel” was released under the name in 1880. The narrative takes place shortly after the election of a new US president, at the start of a new administration. Madeleine Lee, the main character, is a widow who relocates to Washington to be near the political center. The topics of political power—acquisition, utilization, and abuse—are examined throughout the book. Although none of the characters are real, the book is read as a critique of the 1870s presidential regimes.
