About this book
In one passage of Despised and Rejected, Mrs. Blackwood stamps a letter inviting Antoinette de Courcy to spend a weekend at Eastwold, and works out how to win over Mrs. Ryan, so that Antoinette can come along to the dance. It is Mrs. Blackwood's At Home that afternoon, and she thinks it will be a nice surprise for Dennis.
In another, Antoinette observes a household of young people before the dance. Doreen is excited about her first dance and thinking of Hugh Clavering from next door. Lily, who goes up to London daily to a School of Economics, calls dancing rot, and Antoinette decides she does not like her. Elsewhere a voice describes birdsong, bees and a river, and mentions Covent Garden and concerts.
