About this book
On the marshes of eighteenth-century Kent, the mild-mannered vicar of Dymchurch hides a startling double life. Doctor Christopher Syn, respected clergyman, is also the ruthless former pirate who secretly commands the smugglers running contraband past the King's revenue men. Russell Thorndike's 1915 adventure, the first of a long-running series, blends coastal atmosphere, cutlass and pistol, and a churchman whose buried past reaches back across the seas in a plot of vengeance. Full of night rides, hidden signals, and the constant peril of discovery, it grew into one of the enduring cult figures of British popular fiction and later inspired films and a Disney adaptation.
