A retired automobile magnate from the Midwestern city of Zenith, Sam Dodsworth sells his company at fifty and sails for Europe with his restless wife, Fran. What begins as a grand tour turns into the slow unraveling of their marriage. Fran chases the glamour and titled admirers of the Continent while Sam, decent and adrift, tries to work out who he is once his work is gone. Sinclair Lewis sets American practicality against European sophistication and finds both fault and appeal in each.
