About this book
Down the Chimney is by Shepherd Knapp. The preface says the play is intended not only for acting but also for reading. The preface says the play is so arranged that boys and girls can read it to themselves, just as they would read any other story.
A character named Jack Frost, dressed all in white, asks whether you would believe from the look of things that to-morrow is Christmas. The Grandmother sits on a low chair with the eight grandchildren, four girls and four boys, around her in a half-circle on stools. Isabel begins by asking, 'Grandmother, how old are you?' The text says the effect of a fire on the hearth can be made by quick motions with an ever-ready flashlight operated from behind.
