About this book
The translator's preface presents Elizabeth of Bavaria, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, as a sorrowful figure for whom the throne and court life were distasteful. The account of Maximilian Joseph describes studies in history, natural science and political economy at the University of Munich and a seat in the Senate chamber on coming of age.
The Empress takes a special interest in Valerie's education, having experienced mortifications from her own lack of education during her early married life. The description of Valerie's studies includes instruction in Latin, Greek and several modern languages, with the Empress sharing the studies as much as possible. Elizabeth calls herself a fatalist and says that nothing people do can alter whatever is destined to happen.
